I think we are all convinced of the superpowers of adding avocado to your daily diet. If not then check out my previous blog post about the health benefits of avocado here. You’ll find some great avocado recipes there as well 😉
But let’s talk avocado seed/pit now. Often the avocado seed is tossed into the bin or compost pile or sprouted to create an avocado tree. What most people don’t know is that the avocado seed is edible as well. In fact, it is even more nutritious than the flesh.
Here are 10 Good Reason Why You Should Start To Eat Avocado Seed
1. Antioxidant Powerhouse
70% of the antioxidants are found in the seed. These antioxidants have the power to neutralize free radicals, which are linked to many diseases and obesity. The avocado seed contains polyphenols similar to the ones found in green tea.
2. Packed With Soluble Fibers
The seed is packed with soluble fibers. It contains more soluble fibers than most other foods on our planet.
3. Soothe Digestive Issues
The avocado seed has been used for ages in South-America to treat dysentery and GI tract issues. It reduces inflammation, prevents gastric ulcers, and relieves constipation. It is excellent for diarrhea as well and can help to avoid bacterial and viral diseases.

How To Use Avocado Seed
Avocado seed can be used in smoothies, sauces, or dressings, but keep in mind that it has a slightly bitter taste. So add enough sweet countering ingredients (like sweet fruits, maple syrup or raw honey) to cover up the bitterness. You can also add it to your facial mask or scrubs as an exfoliant or make avocado pit tea. The seed can also be used as a natural pink-hued dye for fabric.
The best way to use avocado seed: grind into a powder and add to sauces, dressings, or smoothies. To avoid ruining your blender or food processor, especially if it’s not a high-speed blender or powerful food processor, dry seed and add it to a plastic bag and crush with a hammer first.

Wow, very useful information about avocado seeds. Thanks so much. I love avocados ever since I grew up in my grandparents farm in my country the Dominican Republic, as I was a little girl I used to go under the avocados trees and eat them just like that. . I really LOVE AVOCADOS, but never imagined this information about it, I am looking forward to this from now on . Thanks
Mayra
You’re welcome! So cool to grow up with avocado trees in abundance. Dominican Republic is such a beautiful country. I have been a few years ago and loved it. I’m growing my own first avocado trees right now. I hope it works. Have a great day 😉
Can you dehydrate the seed to dry it out any or would you just do it raw?
Hi Lynn! I dried it at room temperature, but you can indeed use your dehydrator to dry the seed and make it easier and less though to blend into a powder.
i dried my avocado seed into the heat of the sun in two days but the seed become so soft and i dont know how it will become a powder? or i should blend my avocado seed after i removed it?
Hi Kaey, I dried mine on the windowsill for several days, and then crushed them with a hammer in a plastic bag before grinding it into a powder. I have never had any issue with the seed becoming soft. Is there a high humidity were you live, also you can dry them in the sun but keep them indoors during the night to avoid moisture absorption.
i live in the philippines and it’s summer here. maybe because of our climate that the avocado seed becomes so soft. i crushed one of my avocado seed right now and it turns into an orange,is it normal? i really want to try the avocado seed powder and add it in my recipe. so maybe someday it can cure my mother, because she have a heart condition.
Yep, orange is the right color. It’s rainy season where we live (Cambodia) and these days it is hard to dry anything… even our clothes hardly dry. Eating a well-balanced whole food diet and regular (mild) exercise (like walking, yoga, etc) is the best way to conquer heart diseases. Since I changed my diet my cholesterol levels are in check and not too much issues anymore with my heart rhythm disorder. Enjoy the rest of the week 😉
thank you very much for your advice and replied to my comment. im so sorry coz i have so many question about the avocado seed powder.. take care always
My pleasure 😉
I cannot seem to find calories of avocado pit powder. I’d like to know how many calories are in and other nutritional info on powdered avocado pit that i blend myself.
Hi Helen, it is indeed hard to find nutritional data for avocado seeds. There are a few studies on its antioxidant levels and fiber, but apart from that it is very hard to find more data as it is not the most popular food out there. However, you can find more info here: http://www.rawfamily.com/news/2009/04_09_1.html
You could also email companies that sell avocado seed powder and ask them for more info.
Hope this helps!
Please my question is can avocado seed powder treat obesity? I have the powder But I want make it capsules And take it naturally to reduce my weight. …Please can you advise me…
Hi there, to successfully lose weight it is important to change your lifestyle and eating pattern. While avocado seed can help you on the way it is not the magical weight loss substance. I’m afraid there is no such thing as a wonder, magical pill… not even if it comes from a natural source. Although some of these natural pills will help you to lose the weight, once you stop taking them you gain all the weight and then some back. If you are serious about losing your weight forever, step-by-step changes to your diet is the way to go. If you are interested I have a complete program (which includes personal coaching too) to help you out. you can check it out here: http://www.thinforever.me take care and enjoy the rest of your week.
I have several avocados ready to consume. I’m very interested in trying this and have a couple of questions. Does the hull have to be removed? And like a peach pit, is there a smaller seed inside the large round one or do you use the entire golf ball sized pit?
Hi Lisa, you don’t have to remove the hull, and you can crush and blend the whole pit. The result is an orange powder. Best is to store the powder in a cool dark place in an ambered color glass jar or another container that keeps out the light. If your blender isn’t powerful enough, a grater works too but is a lot of work. Good luck!
so my avocado felt ready to go. It was still firm & not mushy but soft enough with pressure applied that I could tell it was ripe. When I cut into it the seed/pit was quite soft and the knife went right through. There is no browning & the flesh looks good. I tasted a small bit of the flesh & it seems fine. It is not watery, brown or rotted in any way & looks totally normal. But I am a bit put-off by the soft pit/seed as I have never encountered that before. Before I gobble the whole thing down I am wondering if this is ok. Please help!
Hi Meghan, if the flesh looks ok and tastes ok then you should not worry. I had it once too and I’m not sure why this happens. Although I wouldn’t use the pit and discard that one. I tried to dry the soft pit we had a while ago, but it stayed soft and I wasn’t able to make a nice powder out of it. Take care!
I am a first time reader of this site and would like to know if it’s true that certain blood groups shouldn’t take avocado?if yes please can you explain better and give guide lines.I love the fruit so much
Hi Hauwa, welcome to the website! To my opinion the blood group diet doesn’t make any sense at all. One study found that adults eating the type A diet showed improved health markers, but this occurred in everyone, not just those with type A blood type. In 2013, a major review concluded that no evidence exists to support benefits of blood type diet. The best way to make sure your body stays in perfect condition is to go easy (or eliminate) on meat and dairy, avoid sugar and refined grains at all cost, and eat lots of raw and cooked vegetables and fresh fruits… and avocados are part of that. So if you love them by all means eat them as much as you like. They are packed with healthy fats, antioxidants, protein and many other beneficial nutrients. Hope this helps! Take care!
