A good night’s rest is essential for our health and well-being. During the night our body eliminates toxins. It’s a scientific fact that the risk of developing diseases increases when people get less than 6-7 hours of sleep. For many people, it’s hard to get a good night’s rest due to stress or nervousness.

This aroma-therapeutic facial massage is an easy technique that you can do alone before you go to sleep and will help you to relax and fall asleep. Different types of oil can be used as a basic or carrier oil. Sweet almond oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, or combinations of different basic oils. You can immediately make a bigger amount and store it in a dark, glass bottle for later.

For 50 ml base oil add 10 drops of lavender essential oil and 10 drops of Ylang-ylang essential oil. Lavender has a calming and relaxing effect. It may reduce stress and anxiety. The sensual Ylang-ylang aroma has calming and balancing effect. Try different mixtures of essential oils in the same amounts. When choosing the essential oils it is important that you like the scent, so it can help your mind and body to relax. Scents you dislike will have an opposite effect and make you more anxious and stressed.

Other essential oils can be used, but try not to mix too many essentials in one massage oil. Bergamot can be helpful when feeling depressed or against insomnia. Mandarin works relaxing and calming, just as Marjorie, rose and basil. They can be helpful against stress and nervousness. Put some drops of the essential oil infused oil in the palm of your hands.

Make yourself comfortable and close your eyes. Put your hand palms on your face and breath slowly. Start making small circles between the eyes, your temples, both sides of the nostrils, from the chin and cheek back to your temples. Those circular movements are called frictions.

The effleurage technique can also be used. Effleurage is a French word meaning touch lightly. Make a soothing, stroking movement starting under the eyes over your cheeks and back. Massage the nostrils, cheeks, forehead, and chin by making gentle strokes. End the massage with your eyes still closed and both hands covering your whole face. Take one last deep breath.

Time to go to bed!
