Are you having a hard time to wake up earlier than 7 am in the morning? Are you often feeling exhausted that you cannot help but repeatedly press the snooze button on your alarm? Many people have experienced the same thing and they have attributed it to the fact that they are not a morning person. Though some people prefer to be a night owl, being a morning person comes with a host of benefits since our bodies were originally designed to be a morning person.

According to some experts, morning persons are thinner, healthier, more energized, safer drivers, more proactive, happier, exercise more consistently, perform better at school or work, and have lower blood sugar levels.

Though I was not much of a morning person a few years back, moving to Cambodia has turned me into one and I’m absolutely loving it. No more snoozing. I feel rested every morning and natural wake up once the first rays of sun enter my room around 5.30-6 am. Mornings are so peaceful here and the temperatures are still bearable. I love the see the world slowly waking up around me and treasure they quite and refreshing moments of the day.

Did you know that anyone can become a morning person? Here are some tips to help you out.


1. Set a schedule

The rise of technology has brought television, Netflix, social media, games, and a lot of innovations that can distract you from sleeping early. To help you sleep early, you need to set a schedule and follow it. A schedule will prevent you from staying up late. Time passes swiftly when you are doing something that you enjoy like playing games and watching television. Setting a schedule will enable you to balance all the activities that you need to accomplish before bedtime. It will also serve as a reminder for you to sleep early.

Sleep early to get the recommended 7 to 9 hours of shut-eye. By getting enough sleep, you are guaranteed not to push that snooze button on your alarm. Why? Because getting the recommended hours of sleep gives you the energy you need in order to face the morning. And here’s a bonus: According to some studies, sleeping early reduces stress and boosts your immune system, thereby keeping you healthy!


2. Create a vision board

Create a vision board to keep yourself motivated. You need to maintain your motivation for becoming a morning person. A vision board will help you if you find it difficult to adjust to your new routine of sleeping early. It will serve as a reminder of your goal of becoming a morning person.

To create a vision board, print everything that is motivational and related to your goal of becoming a morning person. Cut out pictures and paste them on your vision board. Write down your reasons and goals to ensure that you do not stray from your objective, which is to become a morning person. Finally, place the vision board on a spot where you can easily see it every time you wake up. That way, it will be the first thing that you will see in the morning.


3. Make it a habit

Finally, make sure to stick to your routine. Even if you find it hard to press the stop button on the remote because you’re enjoying the movie too much or not wanting to stop the game because you need to surpass your last high score, find the willpower to do so. You must commit to your schedule. Once you are used to the routine, you will find it easier to wake up in the morning.

After a few weeks of setting and sticking to your new routine, you will not even need to think about waking up early. In fact, some studies say that it only takes 21 days of repeated action to form a habit. You will feel that it comes naturally to you because it has already become a habit.
