I love making my own eco-style cosmetics. Although I mostly use a homemade Aloe Vera based body lotion, they can be very tricky to emulsify and take some time to prepare.
A few weeks ago a friend told me about her amazingly easy alternative for homemade body lotions. As I was using my last bits of my Aloe lotion, I decided to try something new… and I must say I love these lotion bars. They are super easy to make and can be stored out of the fridge for a longer period. So if you’re new to making your own cosmetics, this recipe is definitely a good start.
They are completely safe for babies and children and can be used to soothe diaper rash or eczema. For me, they work wonders on my dry skin, and my hubby is using them to soften and hydrate his face after shaving.
And the best part, the recipe can be adjusted to your personal needs and makes a great gift for family and friends.
Homemade Lotion with Coconut Oil
Ingredients
- ½ cup organic coconut oil
- 1 teaspoon Vitamin E oil (optional)
- ½ cup organic shea butter, mango butter, or cacao butter (or a combination of those 3)
- ½ cup grated beeswax or beeswax pellets
- 50 drops of essential oil(s) of your choice (optional)
- Mold (I used a silicone muffin mold, but any mold-like shape will work)
If you are planning to make them as a gift or for your children, they sell cheap soap molds on Amazon in the form of cars, animals, hearts, stars, etc. I’m waiting for a mold of a super cute sheep as my godchild loves a cartoon called ‘Shaun The Sheep’, so it is going to be the perfect gift for him together with a car-shaped bar. But like mentioned every mold-like shape will do the trick. I prefer a silicone mold as they pop out easily.
How to…
- Melt all ingredients except, the essential oils, in a double boiler. Stir constantly until all ingredients are melted and well combined.
- Remove from the heat and add the essential oils of your liking. Stir gently.
- Pour the mixture into the mold.
- Allow them to cool completely before popping them out of your mold.
I used cacao butter only because I love the smell of dark chocolate and I added vanilla essential oil. But that’s all up to you! Think I might try them with peppermint, lavender, ylang-ylang, or orange next time I make them.
If the consistency is not ok for you, just melted all the bars again and add more beeswax for a firmer bar or add an oily substance like sweet almond or jojoba oil if you want a softer bar.
How to use lotion bars
A lotion bar is quite similar to a lip balm. When you rub the bar over your skin, the bar warms and leaves a thin layer on your skin. Your skin absorbs the nourishing and hydrating oils, and the beeswax forms a layer to keep even more moisture in your skin.
See super easy and cheap to make. You can even turn this recipe into a sunscreen bar by adding a couple of tablespoons of non-nano zinc oxide powder or add 1/2 cup organic arrowroot and 1 tablespoon baking soda to make an all-natural deodorant.
