Essential oils have the power to influence our feelings and general mood. The smell of essential oils you like the most induce a calming and relaxing feeling. Not only our mind but also our body takes the benefits from inhaling the essential oils through the air. It is important to use essential oils that you like to make this double effect on mind and body work. Using them on a daily basis in combination with meditation promotes emotional and mental health. There are many ways to add essential oils to the air around you such as perfumes, room diffusers, sprays and oil burners.

An oil burner is an easy way to benefit from the scent of essential oils. It works by heating water with a few drops of essential oils or mixture in it. Here are some essentials I like to use and experiment with during my daily meditation and home aromatherapy sessions

Uplifting scents

Uplifting scents are a great way to relieve you from your daily stresses. They can ease feelings of depression, anxiety, lethargy, and stress. Or just create a happy feeling in general. Bergamot, lemon balm, geranium, basil, sandalwood, rose absolute and rose otto are commonly used the create uplifting feelings. Neroli, Roman chamomile and incense show great results when struggling with anxiousness. If you feel lethargic consider using jasmine, rosemary or patchouli in your mixture. Mandarin and orange are known as the ‘lighthearted’ or ‘happy’ oils that enhance the uplifting feeling.

Stimulating scents

Stimulating scents are a boost for mind and body. They are a great way to help you through the day when feeling lethargic or when you had a bad nights rest. Some oils can be used to stimulate your brain activity and can be used before attending an exam. Rosemary, peppermint, cardamom, and basil are very well known for their benefits on our memory and are a great way to put us in a state of clear concentration. Other stimulating oils that are worth a try during your meditation sessions are eucalyptus and other oils made out of spices.

Relaxing and calming scents

Relaxing and calming scents such as incense, ylang-ylang and lavender are a great source to ease our mind after a hard day of work and relief you from all stress. They lower our breathing process so we are able to breath more deeply which gives a calming effect on mind and body. Sandalwood, rose otto, neroli, and bergamot are also commonly used. These are all home aromatherapy scents that are sure to give a soothing and relaxing effect.
