Health is largely determined by what and how you eat. So, it is easy to see that your kitchen plays a significant role in your overall health. It has been proven in a number of studies that improving specific aspects of your kitchen and diet will actually improve your health and weight.

At our home, the kitchen is definitely the beating heart where most of the magic happens. Both, my hubby and I love to create new recipes and cook… and over the years, we have seen our health improve beyond what we ever could have hoped for.

Since 2014, my hubby is successfully off his weekly interferon injection to control Multiple Sclerosis. Up until this day, he hasn’t had any flare-ups and feels great.

While he probably still has MS as it is an incurable autoimmune disease, it seems he was able to push it to the background and improve his quality of life through the power of healthy foods.

Here are some easy-to-incorporate healthy kitchen tips you can use to improve your family’s health.

1. Keep unhealthy snacks out of plain sight

Want to eat less of the unhealthy stuff? Then store them out of your direct line of sight. A study once showed that people who keep cereal on their counters have higher BMI readings than those who stored theirs in pantries or cabinets, so keeping them out of your sight is really a huge help.

To make this technique work even more efficiently for you, try replacing those unhealthy snacks with healthier food options. This means putting healthy snacks, like fruits, on your kitchen counter.

2. Make your own healthy snacks and desserts

Some chefs are now more creative in designing and preparing their dessert recipes, with the intention of enticing customers to buy. They tend to design their desserts in a creative and appealing way.

Due to their visual appeal, a lot of people are more enticed to try these products, instead of their plain-looking or homemade counterparts. It can also lead to excessive eating as your senses are always tickled.

The best solution for this is to try preparing your own creative desserts and snacks.

Here are a few examples:

  • Kale guacamole and veggie sticks
  • Coconut Flavored Berry Chia Seed Pudding
  • No-Bake Hazelnut Bounty Bars
  • Green smoothie ice cream
  • Delicious Coconut Lemon Squares
  • Refreshing Ginger Peach Popsicles

3. Move the serving section out of the table

This may seem like a matter of inconvenience, but it is one of those sneaky healthy kitchen tips that can significantly help in reducing your food consumption. Placing your serving section out of the dining table forces you and other household members to move around to grab food. This makes it a little harder to gorge on food.

4. Reduce the size of your plate

This is one of the most time-tested tips for reducing caloric consumption. Reducing the size of your plate not only reduces your overall food intake per serving but also creates a psychological effect of satiety. This technique, when done correctly, can reduce your caloric intake by up to 30 percent. Smaller plates definitely worked for me!

5. Plan your meals

Planning the meals for the week ahead and making a shopping list will not only save you tons of time, but it will also help you to avoid impulse buys when grocery shopping. Also, avoid going to the grocery store when you are hungry, this often leads to unnecessary purchases of quick, unhealthy foods to eat on the go.

6. Reduce your snack packs

If buying snacks, reduce the size of your snack packs (unless your snack packs are fresh fruits and veggies) will do wonders for your body. Most people purchase family size snacks both for sharing and for reduced costs. However, if you’re eating alone, this will cause you to eat more than what you need. Considering that, it pays to purchase snacks in smaller packages.

A more laid-back arrangement, soft lighting, and some soothing music are some ways to do the trick.
