Herbal tea can do wonders! Unlike the “real” teas (such as green, black, white, yellow, oolong, etc.), herbal teas or tisanes are caffeine-free. Drinking herbal tea is always a good idea. It has a great taste and you can mix some of them together to make your own personal flavor. Next to its great taste, herbal teas have tons of healing properties.

Some of the herbs contain high levels of vitamins and minerals and have calming effects on your stomach. Others are excellent to ease a troubled mind and make stress fade away. I like to drink herbal tea in the evening to relax and unwind after a hard day at work.

I’ll list some of my favorites and their use. Feel free to experiment and mix some of them together to your personal taste. My favorite is a mixture of peppermint, ginger, green tea or matcha tea (optional), cinnamon, and cardamom.

  • Peppermint has a refreshing taste due to its high levels of menthol. It has a calming effect on the digestive system and our stomach. Mint tea is a great option after dinner. It is one of the easiest herbs to grow yourself.
  • Chamomile has a soothing and calming effect. Helps to ease stress, anxiousness, and tensions. Chamomile is great when having a headache. Tea is made from the flowers of the true or Roman chamomile.
  • Lemon balm is an excellent herbal tea to drink after a busy day. It has a soothing effect on your digestive system and is an easy-to-combine herb.
  • Thyme can be used when having a sore throat or a cough. Thyme has a powerful aroma and is a great disinfectant.
  • Rosemary has a strong aroma and gives our hearts a warming feeling. Helps when having a headache and improves our digestive system.

Additional Benefits of Herbal Tea

  • Ginger, use approximately 1 cm freshly peeled and chopped root. It is an excellent boost for the immune system when having a cough, a cold or the flu. I always add some lemon and honey for a better taste.
  • Lavender tea is made from the fresh or dried flowers. It is a mild tea and tastes great with some honey. It reduces headaches and insomnia.
  • Cardamon pods give your tea a sweet and delicious scent and taste. I like to add them to many of my teas for its great taste. Crush 3-4 pods softly to make a delicious cardamon tea that will help you soothe a sore throat or a cold.
  • Sage has a pepper-like, spicy taste. Ideal when feeling cold and tired or when having a cold. It has a warming effect.
  • Sambucus flowers are little white flowers that give your tea a light lemon taste. It has a soothing and calming effect. When Sambucus flower, peppermint, and yarrow are equally added to your tea, it gives a significant boost to your immune system when the flu is developing.

For one cup of tea add one teaspoon dried herbs, double or triple this volume of fresh herbs. Fresh herbs are always better. When using dried herbs make sure they are of good quality. Pour boiling hot water on the herbs and steep long enough. Some of them need as long as 10-15 minutes to bring all of their healthy compounds out.
