Most parents with children who are diagnosed with ADHD (attention-deficit, hyperactivity disorder) are conflicted when faced with a choice to give them ADHD medications because of the dangers and scary side effects.
While it does treat the symptoms, the constant use of ADHD drugs may cause loss of sleep, loss of appetite, heart problems, mood swings, and suicidal thoughts. Not to mention all the time that goes into planning school activities and behavioral therapy sessions.
Having to maintain all of these can be very expensive for the parents and quite exhausting for the children.
But, what if there was alternative and cheaper way to keep your child’s symptoms under control?
Studies suggest that with an active and healthy lifestyle, staying hydrated, and eating an ADHD diet can prove to work just as well as the conventional methods, and maybe the thing standing in between you and spending thousands of dollars on medications and therapy.
Factors Beneficial to Those Diagnosed with ADHD
1. Keeping up an active and healthy lifestyle
Allowing your kids to have at least one hour of play time at the park and making sure they have enough time to rest and recover is essential to their lifestyle. Overworking them to the point of fatigue is not healthy nor will it control the symptoms. Maintaining a loving environment is important for the sake of their welfare.

2. Staying hydrated
No less than eight to nine cups of water a day. Make sure to avoid those sugary drinks and desserts because those will help increase the hyperactivity. Your kids may cry and hate you for it, but it’s for their own good. Hopefully, they’ll get used to eating organic fruits instead.
3. Eating the right food
Having poor dietary habits does not cause ADHD, but having healthy eating habits will significantly benefit those who have ADHD. An ADHD diet consists out of balanced meals with lots of vegetables, complex carbohydrates, and plenty of protein that can help keep the symptoms under control.
Here are some things you could incorporate into an ADHD diet:
- Foods rich in protein are used as neurotransmitters in the body and prevent sudden increases in blood sugar.
- B vitamins and minerals such as iron, zinc, and magnesium can correct a nutritional deficiency that will control the ADHD symptoms.
- Gingko and ginseng act like stimulants without the side effects of ADHD medications.
Several foods can trigger the ADHD symptoms, making the kids more destructive and restless.
Be wary to avoid or take in small, controlled quantities these items:
- Foods and snacks with a high amount of sugar
- Foods with artificial coloring and preservatives
- Foods that cause allergies
Most people can only imagine what it would be like to be diagnosed with ADHD. It is a tough path to wander on, especially for children who might not fully grasp the situation that they have been placed into. However, with the love and support from family members and friends, your child could live a life just as happy as anyone else’s.
