Next to a healthy body, it is important to keep your mind in balance. Meditation is a safe and easy way to balance your physical, emotional, and mental state. It can bring down blood pressure or relieve insomnia. Moreover, it has a calming effect on the heart and helps individuals with asthma to breathe easier.

It takes away the daily stresses of life and creates inner peace in a positive and, for some, spiritual way. Meditation can be seen as a form of internal stress management. The positive energy that is created will help control the mind and react to emotions and feelings. Meditation enhances the ability to face challenges. It is known that stress of all sorts can cause negative medical conditions.

Less stress equals fewer problems!

Meditation has been rooted in the customs of the world’s great cultures and religions. Practically all religious groups meditate in one or the other form. Relieve suffering and better healing are two benefits of meditation that have been known and practiced for thousands of years.

There are different ways to meditate

Some will focus on relaxation and others on building up internal energy, compassion, patience, forgiveness,… Everybody can meditate! It’s very simple and can be done everywhere and at any time. And the good thing is, it won’t cost you a penny.

A good technique to start with is breath watching. Through controlling your breathing you will learn how to meditate, stilling your mind and calming your body to focus on your inner expression. Do not allow your mind to chase after every thought or object. In the beginning, I can recommend closing your eyes when meditating to avoid distractions.

This simple exercise is a good starter. Start breathing in and out calmly and concentrate on this process. Your mind will slow down and your body will calm down. Give your full attention to your breathing, don’t let other things interfere. After observing how you breathe in and out, try to focus on the gaps in between.

Or try to focus on the gentle feeling of your breath flowing over your nostrils. If you just start meditating you will experience some difficulties in focusing. Don’t worry, this is completely normal. Don’t get upset if you can’t focus. Just start again or try it later. Seek out calmness, find a spot where you feel comfortable with no other sounds. You’ll see you will improve every day.

I try to have a daily session of 15 minutes. You can incorporate it into your yoga or exercise routine.
