There are many commercially available treatments to cure sinusitis. But why spending tons of dollars on those treatments if you have effective and reliable natural sinus remedies hiding in your cupboards?

Many doctors will put you on an antibiotic cure, but did you know that almost all cases of sinusitis are caused by a virus. So taking antibiotics makes no sense. Antibiotics are widely overused and causing bacteria to become resistant.

While medicines can help, most sinusitis cases resolve on their own without any medical treatment. But you can help your body to cure itself or relieve the discomforts with these natural sinus remedies.

6 Amazing Natural Sinus Remedies

1.      Cayenne Pepper or Horseradish

Those 2 spices are very effective for opening up and draining your sinuses. They improve blood circulation, reduce swelling and boost your immune system to fight those viruses or bacteria.

Mix 1 teaspoon of horseradish or cayenne pepper in 1 cup of hot water. Drink this mixture 2-3 times a day to get rid of congestions. If you don’t like the taste of this mixture add a teaspoon of honey. Honey has antibacterial and antiviral properties and will help you to kill those germs.

Or eat a spoonful of crushed horseradish mixed with lemon juice to drain mucus out of your nose. Wasabi or Japanese horseradish is also a good option for you to try.

2.      Watch Your Diet

Did you know that there are some kinds of food that are actually aiding mucus-formation? Those will not help you and even worsen your sinus infection. So avoid flour products, eggs, chocolate, fried and processed foods, sugar and dairy products and drink plenty of water or herbal teas. Drinking enough fluids help you thin the mucus. Avoid alcohol, as it may worsen your swelling.

Add more cayenne pepper, horseradish, garlic, turmeric and onions to your soup and meals to eliminate excess mucus.

3.      Steam Vapor, the simplest of all natural sinus remedies

One of the most simple, effective and common natural sinus remedies. Boil water until it steams. Pour it into a bowl and cover your face and head with a towel. Inhale and exhale the vapors through your nose. Add Eucalyptus, thyme or peppermint essential oils (or fresh or dried herbs) to the mixture for a better effect.

You can also use a mixture of apple cider vinegar and water (50/50) as a vapor steam, but I prefer the fresh smell of peppermint or eucalyptus to relieve my symptoms.

4.      Saline Rinse

Not the most comfortable remedy, but definitely one of the most effective ones to clear out mucus and keep your sinuses moisturized. You can use an ear bulb syringe, nasal bulb or a neti pot if you have one.

  • Mix 3 teaspoons of salt with 1 teaspoon of baking soda. Add 1 teaspoon of the mixture to 1 cup of lukewarm distilled or boiled water. Store the remaining salt-baking soda mixture in a clean airtight container for later. If this mixture is too strong for you and you experience burning or stinging, use less of the dry mixture.
  • Draw up the saline mixture in your bulb. Tilt your head to the side and squeeze half of the saline mixture gently into your top nostril. The solution should come out of the other nostril. Repeat with the other nostril. Make sure to avoid moving your head back or you’ll get the mixture in your throat.
  • Blow your nose gently after the saline rinse.
  • Rinse your bulb thoroughly and leave open to the air to dry.

5.      Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar has so many uses and can also help you to treat sinusitis. You can use it as a vapor steam treatment, but you have other options to choose from.

The most abundantly used method is mixing 1 cup of warm water with 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar and one tablespoon raw honey and drink this 3 times a day for 5 days. Or if you don’t mind the taste of apple cider vinegar you can simply take 1 tablespoon 3 times daily.
