People discrediting other people for what they believe to be true? Honestly, nothing is new under the heavens because history has shown people are indeed out to discredit one another and the same behavior is being shown against people who believe in the Paleo diet.
Recently I received a lot of questions about the paleo diet as there is a lot of contradicting information available on the internet. How strong is evidence for and against Paleo? Before giving it all your trust, here are the bare facts about this diet.
What Paleo Proponents Believe
- They believe that human ancestors ate meat, nuts, and berries, but not foods like dairy, processed foods, grains, and legumes. People in the Paleolithic era were only food gatherers and there was no way that they could prepare or make foods like processed milk, cheese, and hamburgers.
- Meat, seafood, and other animal products represent the staple food of the Paleolithic diet. (high protein and fat diet)
- Paleolithic diet reduces the risk of obesity, diabetes, and heart diseases.
- Nutritional needs of the modern man are still adapted to the diet of his Paleolithic ancestors, and therefore, his metabolism cannot handle many of the foods that have become available from the time agriculture was invented.
- People in the Paleolithic era ate fewer carbs. The diet recommends eating non-starchy vegetables and fruits as the only source of carbs.
- Higher fiber intake not from grains but non-starchy vegetables and fruits.
- Excluded food groups are dairy, grains, legumes, processed oils, refined sugar, salt, alcohol, and coffee.

What Paleo Oppositionists Believe
At the other side of the spectrum, those against the Paleo diet believe that:
- Human ancestors who lived in the Paleolithic era ate grains and legumes, too. And meat was only occasionally on the menu, and definitely not a staple food.
- People’s metabolism (and body) is flexible to different foods contrary to what advocates say.
- There is nothing much that is known about the diet of human ancestors.
The Big Paleo Diet Lie?
So, what’s the big paleo diet lie everybody is talking about? The myth is born out of the belief which the advocates advance. They believe that they can copy in all its essence and form the diet of the “cave man.” That’s next to impossible.
Veggies, fruits and the occasional dose of meat our ancestors ate were very different then what we find in today’s market.
The theory that those human predecessors had excellent health because of their natural diet is at best only a theory. No one knows whether or not these people died out of obesity, heart disease, cancer, or simply out of old age. Nothing is for sure – like Paleo is not a sure deal.
Lastly, it has never been established that the human metabolism is designed only to accommodate a single kind of diet. This generation has seen people live to their ripe old age while enjoying all sorts of foods that they can munch on without experiencing diet problems.
If humans and other organisms could only thrive in circumstances similar to the ones their predecessors lived in, life would not have lasted very long. We evolve and adapt. Although our DNA hasn’t changed much, our body has.
My Take On The Paleo Diet
While I’m not a Paleo enthusiast, because I believe in meat reduction rather than making it a staple food, I must admit the Paleo diet has some benefits too. Living a healthy lifestyle doesn’t come as a one-diet-fits-all.
For some, especially the people who can’t go without meat for a day, the paleo diet will definitely be the better choice, compared to the standard American or Western diet. Next to animal protein, the focus is on eliminating refined sugar and processed foods while increasing the intake of fruits and vegetables. And that’s a good thing, right?
As a last message of the day, I would like to add that instead of trying to categorize your diet and live by strict rules, work towards a balanced lifestyle instead. There is no need to exclude certain food groups from your diet unless you are allergic to them or decide to eat no animal products.
And let’s make one thing clear, we all agree, fruits and vegetables should dominate your plate and refined and processed products must be avoided at all cost.
