Mild Aromatherapy For Babies And Young Children

We love essential oils for their nice fragrance and healing properties. We use them to calm our mind, treat our wounds, soothe our aches, maintain a healthy skin, and sooo much more. If you keep a few safety guidelines in mind those healing oils can also work wonders to help your little ones take their natural benefits for overall health.

Safety Guidelines For Babies And Young Children

  • When your baby or child is on any medication, always contact your doctor or aroma therapist to make sure the oils are safe and won’t interfere with the medication.
  • DO NOT USE ORALLY.
  • Do not use or pour essential oils (pure or diluted) into the ear canal of your baby or child. Compresses or massage oils can be used on the outer ear to soothe pain and prevent the infection to spread.
  • Always use diluted oils. Your baby’s skin is very sensitive and all essential oils you use should be diluted in a good carrier or base oil, such as mineral oil, sweet almond, jojoba, coconut, avocado, or olive oil)

Aromatherapy For Babies And Young Children

Aromatherapy is often used for babies that don’t sleep well or are often restless. Calming oils help your baby to relax and fall asleep.

Oils commonly used for babies and young children:

Bonding And Sleep-Promoting Baby Massage

Baby massage is a great way to bond with your baby and provides a restful sleep. Studies show that babies or young children who often receive a massage are better sleepers, less afraid, and healthier.

Baby massage is safe after 2 months and should be avoided around vaccination time (if you are vaccinating your kids). For babies under the age of one, use a 0,5 dilution. Use 1 drop of essential oil in 10 ml or 2 teaspoons carrier oil and gently massage the feet, legs, arms, back, and tummy of your baby. Stop if your baby doesn’t like it, but most babies will enjoy this.

For kids between 6 and 14, you can use a 1 to 1,5 dilution. Store any leftover dilution in a dark glass bottle for another massage or use it as a calming baby bath oil.

Calming Bath Oils

Only use diluted bath oils. Your baby’s skin is very sensitive and babies love to stick their fingers in their mouth and rub their eyes quite often.

For Colds, Congestion, and Coughs

Diffuse 2 drops of lemon, lavender, or melaleuca during the day and at bedtime for a better sleep. You could use the same essential oils diluted in a carrier oil to massage the back and upper chest when you change your baby’s diaper. Lavender also helps to reduce fever.

Diaper Rash

Add 1 drop of Roman chamomile and 1 drop of Melaleuca with 1 tbsp carrier oil and apply on the affected area after cleaning and patting dry your baby’s bottom. Avoid genitals and cuts and cracks.

You could also add a few drops of calming essential oils like lavender, rose, or chamomile on a tissue or your baby’s clothing when your baby is crying or to provide a restful sleep.
