Alkaline Eating Tips and Tricks To Improve Weight and Overall Health

I’m a huge fan of alkaline eating. During my holistic health and nutrition studies, we learned about the importance of food on the acid-base balance of our body. I was so intrigued by the thought that one simple rule could transform your health and happiness. Especially if you know, both my hubby and I were struggling with our health at that time.

Ever since that day, we slowly eased ourselves into an alkaline lifestyle, and that was maybe the best decision we have ever made in my whole life. We have seen, and felt, some amazing changes happening to our body.

My hubby hasn’t had a single multiple sclerosis (MS) flare-up for years and is off his weekly injections since 2014 without any issues. No more sick-making meds for him and he has never felt any better in his entire life. For me eating a healthy, alkaline diet helped me to manage my weight, control high cholesterol levels, and improve my heart rhythm disorder I inherited from my father’s side.

What is the Alkaline-Acid Balance

When foods are processed and burned down for energy, it leaves acidic or alkaline residues, also referred to as ashes. The standard American or Western diet is far too high in acid-forming foods. Luckily our body is an ingenious system that buffers, or neutralizes, these acidic residues with alkaline material so the pH of our blood stays within tight borders (slight differences in blood pH is fatal).

However, most of us eat way too much acidic foods and do not provide enough alkaline material to neutralize the acidic residues. To keep us alive, the body then seals alkaline material such as magnesium and calcium from elsewhere in the body. This can deprive your body and make you sick. Cancer seems to thrive in acidic environments, too.

Another way of self-protection, when alkaline material is not available, or there are simply too many acids floating around, is to create fat cells to tuck them safely away. So not only are they making you sick, they can make you fat, too.

Discover 9 Powerful Alkaline Eating Tips and Tricks

1.       Start your day with lukewarm lemon water

Although lemons may seem acidic to you, once they are processed or burned down they leave alkaline residues in the body. Lemon water in the morning kick-starts digestion and helps detoxify the liver, too. Before eating or drinking anything else, have a glass of lukewarm water with the juice of half a lemon or one lime.

2.       Know which foods are acid-forming and which alkaline

For optimal health, 60 to 80 percent of what you eat should be alkaline forming, and 20 to 40 percent should be acid forming. Here’s and helpful chart to get you started.

3.       Transform your kitchen

If you are on a mission to live a healthy, alkaline lifestyle it helps to clean out the fridge and cupboards, throw out all processed crap or other weight loss or health sabotaging foods and stock up on alkaline-forming whole foods instead.

4.       Invest in a decent blender

Living an alkaline lifestyle means eating lots of fresh fruits and vegs. The best way to do so is by incorporating at least one green smoothie in your diet a day. When we just started out, I bought a cheap blender which I abused for a few weeks before it broke down. Investing in a decent blender will make things easier to blend (less chopping, and smoother texture), but will, in the long run, be cheaper too.

I have been using my heavy duty blender for a few years now, and it hasn’t let me down a day. It still blends nuts, seeds, hot soups and tougher veggies and fruits without any issue. So instead of buying multiple blenders over a particular time frame, invest once in a decent blender. I know they can be pricey, but I want to share a little secret with you.

Looking for a decent, professional heavy-duty blender, but can’t afford an expensive Vitamix or Blendtec? I  found a much better solution that is ONLY HALF the price and AS GOOD. CLICK HERE for more info.

5.       Make sure to eat your greens at every meal

Leafy greens are alkalizing superstars so make sure to include them in every meal, breakfast included. That’s where green smoothies come into play. If you are like most people a green salad or plate of spinach isn’t exactly the thing you are thinking off when you just wake up.

Green smoothies, however, are the perfect way to sneak leafy greens into your morning breakfast routine.

6.       Plan your meals

Every Friday or Saturday morning I take the time to plan my meals and create a shopping list for the upcoming week. Making a plan makes it easier to stick to a healthy diet, and it takes a lot of stress away during the week. Not only will you avoid indulging in comfort, processed, or takeout food, you’ll be able to relax, too.

7.       Hydrate

According to some studies, about 90 percent of people are chronically hydrated. As we consist mostly out of water, it is crucial to get enough of it throughout the day.  A good rule of thumb is to drink half your body weight in ounces. Ohh and organic herbal teas and lemon water count as water, too.

8.       One bite/step at a time

If you are currently nowhere near the 20/80 acid-alkaline rule, no worries and please do not force yourself to it at once. All the people I have coached or spoken with in the past that forced themselves into a particular diet or way of living almost all failed. While, if taking baby steps and changing diet gradually most people have succeeded without experiencing any issues.

9.       Take time to unwind

Apart from food being an important factor, stress makes the body acidic too. Make sure to take time for yourself and do the things you like. Dee breathing or yoga can bring some peace too.

And remember, no need to rush yourself into this. It will only create more stress on your body. So take it slow and work towards life-long results.
