Homemade Alcohol-Free Vanilla Extract

I love a vanilla scent and flavor and have been making my own vanilla extract for ages. It adds magic to smoothies, overnight oats, chia seed jams, puddings, and other sweet snacks or breakfasts. However, making vanilla extract almost always involves using alcohol to successfully extract the vanillin or compound that gives the flavor.

A while ago I shared with you the many health benefits of vanilla extract and how to make your own. I also covered the different kinds of vanilla beans available on the market and a delicious vanilla green smoothie for you to try. To read the article, CLICK HERE.

Although we only use vanilla extract in small portions and often in baked goods where the alcohol gets dissolved, not all people are keen on using vodka or rum to produce their vanilla extract. And I must admit, sometimes, especially in non-cook recipes, you can slightly taste the alcohol.

So today I want to share with you an alcohol-free method a friend of mine has been using to produce her vanilla extract. It takes a bit longer to steep, but at least it is alcohol-free.

Alcohol-Free Vanilla Extract Recipe

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Slice vanilla beans lengthwise and cut into smaller pieces if needed to make them fit into the jar or bottle.
  2. Place the vanilla beans and glycerin in a jar and cap tightly.
  3. Give it a good shake and store in a cool dark place for at least 6 to 8 weeks. Once a week give it a good shake.
  4. Once it is done, strain beans from the liquid and pour back into the bottle. Store in a cool dark place or use amber colored bottles instead.
  5. As it takes quite a while to steep, make a bigger batch at once and pour in cute little jars and add a nice label. They make a great gift for family and friends.

Thanks for reading. I hope this information was helpful. Until next time!
